Linux is the power house of the IT world. If you have a Smartphone, or a Sat Nav then you already use it. When you use the Internet then you already use it. Many of the world's most successful organisations owe their success to using Linux. Linux is "Open source" software which means that the source code is freely available to be viewed and/or modified providing the modified code is passed on. This means that the quality of the software is very high as it reviewed and improved by very large communities of people, consisting of both users and developers. It also means that bugs get fixed quickly.

The development of Linux is one of the most prominent examples of free and open source software collaboration; typically all the underlying source code can be used, freely modified, and redistributed, both commercially and non-commercially, by anyone under licenses such as the GNU General Public License.  Linux is packaged in a format known as a Linux distribution for desktop and server use. Some popular mainstream Linux distributions include Debian (and its derivatives such as Ubuntu), Fedora and openSUSE. Linux distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting utilities and libraries to fulfill the distribution's intended use.
